MVP vs Prototype vs Proof of Concept: What Founders Actually Need
6 min read · Updated July 2026
Founders and agencies use MVP, prototype, and proof of concept as if they were synonyms. They are not. Getting the distinction right saves weeks of scope arguments and, more importantly, saves you from paying for the wrong thing.
The three at a glance
Proof of Concept
1 – 3 weeksAnswers 'can this technically work?' Internal-only, throwaway, no UX. Think: a script that proves the AI can extract data reliably.
Prototype
2 – 4 weeksAnswers 'do users understand this?' Clickable, no real backend, shown to five to fifteen target users for feedback.
MVP
4 – 10 weeksAnswers 'will people pay for this?' Real product, real users, real payments. The first version of the business, not a demo.
How to pick which one to build first
- Uncertain if it is technically possible? Start with a PoC.
- Uncertain if users will get it? Start with a prototype.
- Confident on both but need to prove willingness to pay? Skip to the MVP.
Budgets you should expect
- PoC: $2,000 to $10,000. A single senior engineer for one to two weeks.
- Prototype: $5,000 to $20,000. A designer plus an engineer, no backend.
- MVP: $15,000 to $75,000. Full team, real infrastructure, live users.
FAQs
What is the difference between an MVP and a prototype?
A prototype tests whether users understand the concept. An MVP tests whether they will pay for it. Prototypes are throwaway artifacts, MVPs are the first version of a real product.
Do I need a PoC before an MVP?
Only if there is real technical risk, like a novel AI capability or a hard integration. For most CRUD SaaS products, skip the PoC.
Can a prototype become an MVP?
Almost never. Prototypes are built to be discarded. Rebuilding a prototype into an MVP usually costs more than starting fresh with what you learned.
How long should each phase take?
PoC: one to three weeks. Prototype: two to four weeks. MVP: four to ten weeks. Longer than that and scope is the problem, not speed.
