Startup Marketing Strategy in 2026: The First 90 Days

8 min read · Updated July 2026

Most early-stage marketing plans fail because they try every channel at once. Great founders pick one or two channels, go deep for 90 days, and only expand after they have proof. This is the exact 90-day plan we run with our marketing clients.

The 90-day structure

Days 1 – 30: Foundations

Positioning, ICP, brand voice, analytics stack, one landing page that converts. No paid spend yet.

Days 31 – 60: One channel

Pick the channel closest to intent for your ICP. Go deep, publish or ship weekly, measure everything.

Days 61 – 90: Scale or pivot

If the channel is working, double the budget. If not, kill it and pick the second-best channel. Never straddle.

How to pick your first channel

  • Selling to founders and marketers? LinkedIn plus founder-led content.
  • Selling to developers? SEO plus open-source or dev-focused content.
  • Selling to consumers? Paid social plus a strong organic hook.
  • Selling to enterprise? Outbound plus events, not content marketing.

Budget allocation for the first 90 days

  • 60% channel spend: ads, content production, or outbound tooling.
  • 25% creative and content: the ad, not the platform, is what actually works.
  • 15% measurement: analytics, attribution, and CRM. If you cannot measure it, you cannot scale it.

FAQs

How much should a startup spend on marketing?

Pre-seed startups typically spend $2,000 to $10,000 per month across all channels. Seed-stage: $10,000 to $50,000. The number matters less than the discipline of one channel at a time.

Should I hire in-house or work with an agency?

In the first 12 months, an agency or fractional CMO is almost always faster and cheaper than a full-time hire. In-house makes sense once you have proven a channel and need to scale it.

How long before marketing shows results?

Paid channels can show signal in 2 to 4 weeks. SEO and content take 3 to 6 months. Outbound sits in the middle at 6 to 10 weeks.

What metrics matter most in the first 90 days?

Cost per qualified lead, activation rate, and paid vs organic mix. Ignore vanity metrics like impressions and follower counts.
